Grandmother Susan asked for an update about how Riley's preschool adjustment is going.
On Tuesday, Riley was very clingy and did not want me to leave him in the morning. This was Tuesday's status report:
AM snack: drank milk, didn't eat snack
Lunch: didn't eat lunch (sausage in a blanket/mashed potatoes)
Afternoon snack: ?
Nap: 1 hr. 20 min
Today I played with my friend: Max - grocery store and cash register
Today I learned: Trace and write the number 1. Colored pictures inside the lines. Danced to "work your body," "we're moving around" and "stop & go." Fun phonics and numbers 1 - 20. Sang songs and listened to stories.
Teachers comments: Good day except would not touch his lunch.
At the end of the day, the staff seemed so worried about Riley not eating lunch that Chris and I decided he would start bringing lunch from home.
On Thursday, Riley proudly carried his new lunchbag inside and eagerly sat down at the table for morning snack. This was Thursday's status report:
A.M. Snack: Ate Well - Cheerios and milk
Lunch: I ate all of my lunch.
Afternoon snack: Ate well.
Nap: 1 hr. 15 min.
Today I played with my friend: George, Anna, Hana, and Grayson - on the merry-go-round and riding on the motorcycle with Grayson.
Today I learned: about Japanese Girls' Day and I made a Japanese Girl. We sang songs, listened to stories and danced to "In My Body," "We're Moving Around" and "Work Your Body"
Teachers Comments: Fun Day!
We think, like me, Riley gets low blood sugar and does not cope well with stress under those circumstances. Having familiar food from home for lunch seemed to make a big difference. His teachers could not believe how quickly he ate it. All in all, a much better day. It probably didn't hurt that one of his schoolmates brought birthday cupcakes for afternoon snack.

Hmmm, what's Japanese Girls' day?
March 3rd is Japanese Girl's Day called Hina-matsuri (Doll Festival.) It's a celebration for Japanese girls. (Japanese Boy's Day is May 5th.) People display a set of hina ningyo (dolls) and props in the house, wishing girls' healthy growth and happiness. Parents or grand parents of a newborn girl buy a set of gorgeous hina dolls unless they have special dolls, which are inherited from generation to generation.
Hina dolls are dressed in Japanese ancient costumes and are displayed on the shelves of a stand covered with a red carpet from the end of February to March 3rd. It is believed that any hina doll display should be taken down soon after the festival day; otherwise girls might have to wait to get married.
Hina-matsuri is also called momo-no-sekku, which means a festival of peach blossoms. Peach blossoms, shiro-zake (white rice wine), and hishi-mochi (diamond shaped rice cakes) are placed on the stand with hina dolls. Hishi-mochi are colored in pink (implies peach flowers), white (implies snow), and green (implies new growth).
The origin of hina-matsuri is said to be an ancient Chinese ceremony that people let paper dolls flow on a river to get rid of bad luck from their bodies. This practice was combined with girls' doll play and was established as hina-matsuri during Edo Period (1603-1867).
Traditionally, girls invited their friends to a home party and had a good time. This festival is commonly celebrated as a school or community activity nowadays, and many people prepare a special meal for girls on this day.
Whew! everything I ever wanted to know about Girl Day! I thought they had changed that to Children's Day.
